The way to protect outdoor LED lighting from induced surge impact damage is to block the high voltage / current transient interference from entering the lighting fixture. Therefore, a surge protective device (SPD) can be used in outdoor LED lighting applications to suppress surge energy and minimize surge impact on lighting equipment.
For SPD, there are a variety of overvoltage protection elements available, including metal oxide varistor (MOV), gas discharge tube (GDT) and transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode. These elements are placed between AC power lines with high impedance, which will become low impedance when high voltage is detected. In low impedance state, these elements can transfer surge energy back to AC power line and return to high impedance state after surge event. In the existing technology, MOV is the first choice because of its high surge energy processing capacity and fast response to transient voltage, and it is also widely used in SPD protection of distribution board. Therefore mov is the most suitable technology of surge protection devices in outdoor LED lighting applications.
The integration of a powerful surge suppression circuit in an outdoor lamp can eliminate the damage caused by surge energy, thus improving the reliability of lighting equipment, minimizing maintenance and improving service life. A surge protection component which can suppress excessive surge to a lower voltage level is the best way to protect LED lamp facilities.
